Palma Nova on the south west coast of Majorca lies next door to Magaluf. These two resort developments are the largest in the district of Calvia and lie about ten miles to the west of Palma the islands capital city. Although officially there is a dividing point between them, over the years they’ve merged more, but of the two, it’s Palma Nova which is slightly the quieter and therefore seen as slightly more suited to family holidays.

One of the earliest purpose built resorts on the island, Palma Nova still retains its original fishing harbour, but today it’s more likely to be filled with yachts than fishing boats. The beaches here are sandy and you can enjoy relaxing on them in the sunshine. Having said this, if you’re looking for an active family holiday then there’s a lot available here.
Water sports are very popular and you can try your hand at a variety of different things including scuba diving, jet skiing and wind surfing, and the beaches are safe and well kept making them ideal for kids.

There is an excellent bus service here which makes exploring the region easy and makes reaching nearby attractions such as the water parks and marineland a simple task. There are a number of areas which are pedestrian only, as well as scores of shops, bars and restaurants many of which are child friendly.

Travelling into Palma from Palma Nova is simple and there’s a bus that runs ever 35-40 minutes on most days. In Palma you’ll find many museums and lots of great shopping available too.

If you’re a family who enjoy walking and hiking, Castell d’Alaro is the most popular hiking trail in Majorca and lies nearby. The trail takes you from Alaro up to the ruins of a castle and hilltop chapel that date back to the 15th century, and the views over the sea and inland toward Palma can be pretty stunning so it’s worth taking your camera along. A family bar and restaurant are at the top near the ruins so you can take pause, rest and recuperate before you head back to the resort.

The pirate show is a dinner show which has two versions. The earlier slot is suitable for family viewing, and the later slot is very much adults only. Dancing, fights, comedy, and action combine to give you a show that’s full of talent and skill. The food is simple but tasty and the price includes your meal, drinks and the show. You’re not allowed to take photos inside, but after the show some of the pirates are usually on hand to talk to the kids and you can buy official photos for an extra fee if you want to.
